I’m xvlust starting to realize that I have a pretty serious social media addiction on my phone. Right now, it’s a scrolling selector, meaning you scroll to a number of minutes between one and 30, but for a brief period a few weeks ago, the app offered up pre-determined values of two minutes or five minutes. I’d opt for five minutes of unblocked time, see that deduction from my bank, open Instagram, and… Basically, even though I end each week with plenty of minutes built up in my bank, I’ve still actively elected not to spend as much time on my blocked apps. I don’t need to play Project Makeover for longer than 10 minutes and having to set a time limit forces me to think about that.
Even when actively searching for similar material or following creators known for posting it, those platforms did not automatically push such videos to the test accounts. As soon as these accounts were created, the platform started recommending videos featuring suggestive dancing or close-up shots of women’s bodies. Users have reported that their Instagram feeds are filled with violent and NSFW (Not Safe for Work) content.
An Android app is also already in development and should be here in “weeks, not months,” English says. I didn’t love that, either, but it went back to the scroller soon enough. I’ve noticed plenty of changes in the five months I’ve been using it, too. The streaks feature, for instance, was only added after the first few weeks the app was available, after he got feedback from users who said they’d like to see something like that.
Steppin incorporates streaks, so every day you use it, you add another day to your streak. Before Steppin, that would have led to at least 10 minutes of me scrolling through other memes, which is what Instagram wants me to do (and, honestly, what I kind of want to do, too). When a friend DMs me a funny meme on Instagram, I only set one minute for myself to open it, view it, and respond.

I’ve even thought about adding Poshmark, where I spend so much time, but I decided against that because I earn money on Poshmark, so it’s already meeting the requirement of “doing something for myself,” which Steppin forces other apps to meet by making me walk around. Those are the two that suck up the majority of time I consider wasted in my average day, although I love them both so (so) much. Steppin doesn’t pre-identify social media, games, or any app, let alone block them for you. When I read the rundown, I assumed the app would work by locking up all my other apps until I hit a certain amount of steps every day, which made me nervous.
I already get plenty of steps in on a daily basis, but this has certainly encouraged me to do more. Feedback and actual user data determine a lot about what happens to Steppin, so for now, I’m using it every day to do my part. But Steppin could include a lot more than just new versions, functionality tweaks, or streaks over time. I’d have to open Steppin again, trade another five minutes in, and ultimately “spend” 10 minutes just to redeem five. He explained that he came up with the idea while on vacation with his family, noticing that no one was looking at their phones while they walked around, but as soon as they got into a car to travel to a farther destination, everyone was glued to their screens.
Steppin: Steps for Screen Time
Instagram users worldwide have taken to X and Reddit, reporting that their feeds are being flooded with violent and NSFW content.
You undo your streak by removing an app from your blocked list or changing your preferences around how many steps give you a minute of app access or how long your banked minutes last before resetting. My earned time resets weekly, meaning steps I took yesterday still apply to today’s banked time, but you can set it to reset daily or never, too. If you’re someone who doesn’t get a lot of time to walk in the day, you can use the app on its lowest settings, trading 25 steps for a minute of app time, and still get the benefits. As your phone or fitness tracker detects steps, they get converted into minutes that you bank and can then convert back into time to unlock your apps. Even just 3 hours a day over the course of year adds up to (and prepare yourself for this) 45 full days on your phone.
The only issue with these is that they’re pretty easy to just ignore. There are tons of apps out there you can download to help curb your social media addiction. Apple provides different focus modes for your phone when you swipe down from the top of your home screen. You can then create a “sleep” mode and choose the hours you don’t want any alerts. This will prevent it from throwing out a notification every time someone else sends a link, asks a question, or replies to something. You can tap the chat name and press the “bell” button to mute the entire chat.

My feed is full of violent and sensitive stuff! Although Meta has apologised and claimed to have fixed the problem, some users claim that they are still seeing violent and graphic content on their feeds. While some of these posts were marked as “Sensitive Content,” they were still accessible, raising concerns about Instagram’s content moderation policies.
